  14. What is PIE?
  15. ------------

  17. 1. PIE is a file renaming utility that extracts the camera 
  18.    information from the raw .jpg and renames the PIC000XX.JPG 
  19.    filename to a more computer friendly name keyed to the date and 
  20.    time as well as other photo information.
  21.    This lets your favorite picture viewer display your photos
  22.    in correct chronological order. 
  23. 2. Because PIE shows you exposure information for each picture,
  24.    you can better understand digital camera functions by analyzing
  25.    shutter, flash use, aperture, zoom position, and quality settings.
  26. 3. The exposure information is saved in the .jpg file - 
  27.    as long as the file is not modified. Any modification to the JPG 
  28.    file will destroy this data. To prevent loss of picture information
  29.    PIE records exposure data in standard text files, which also may
  30.    be imported into a spreadsheet or database.
  31. 4. PIE is a file manager. Move, Copy, Delete and Rename JPG files. 
  32. 5. The new PIE has an integrated picture viewer. 
  33. 6. The new PIE is one of the first programs which allow you to 
  34.    rotate JPG pictures without any loss of quality! Rotation is 
  35.    done without decompression/compression. The so-called ╗lossless 
  36.    rotation½ makes it easy to take pictures in portrait mode.

  83. Lossless JPEG-Transformation
  84. ----------------------------

  86. It works by rearranging the compressed data (DCT coefficients),
  87. without ever fully decoding the image.  Therefore,
  88. its transformations are lossless: there is no image
  89. degradation at all.
  90. The transformation has no restrictions regarding image
  91. dimensions. But it will operate rather oddly if the image
  92. dimensions are not a multiple of the iMCU size (usually 8
  93. or 16 pixels), because they can only transform complete blocks of
  94. DCT coefficient data in the desired way.
  95. The default behavior when transforming an odd-size image
  96. is designed to preserve exact reversibility and mathematical
  97. consistency of the transformation set.  
  98. For practical use, you may prefer to discard any untransformable
  99. edge pixels rather than having a strange-looking strip along the
  100. right and/or bottom edges of a transformed image. This is the
  101. meaning of the 'Trim Edges' Menu. Obviously, a transformation
  102. with checked 'TrimEdges' is not reversible, so strictly speaking
  103. Rotation with this switch is not lossless.

  110. PIE is distributed as shareware. The basic features like renaming and
  111. file managing are free. If you want to use the extended features such as 
  112. picture view and lossless rotation you have to register.
  113. Registered users are entitled to FREE upgrades for an unlimited 
  114. period of time (FOR EVER!) by downloading the latest versions. If a 
  115. new authorization code is required it will be issued upon request at 
  116. no charge to users. Registration benefits also include free 
  117. technical support by e-mail, notification of upgrades and other 
  118. products via e-mail, etc.
